GARDEN PLANS

"Square Foot Gardening" is so versatile!  The different number of designs are almost limitless.  You can have square or rectangular gardens --  hexagon, triangle, octagon gardens -- or any combination that you can dream up.

Based on my experience, I find that it is best not to have a raised bed that is wider than 4' from side to side.  Unless you have longer arms than I have, I just cannot reach (comfortably) any further than about 2 feet in toward the center of my garden.  I do believe that the originator of the Square Foot Garden (Mel Bartholomew) also recommends the same garden width.  I most favor gardens that are 3 feet wide myself :-)

It's amazing what you can grow in a 20'x20' plot of property!  Of course, I recommend that you put up some sort of fencing to contain your garden and keep dogs and any other unwanted intruders out.  Also, this fencing is a great trellis to use!  On all of the garden plans I have below, I have a 2' bed on the inside perimeter of the garden where you can grow vining plants such as cucumbers, snow peas, cantaloupe, beans and even a very vigorous cherry tomato.
